American music icon Lionel Richie is expected to perform in Gulu, Uganda, this June as part of a climate change awareness concert.
The news of the 75-year-old singer-songwriter’s anticipated visit was confirmed by Uganda’s State Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao. He emphasized that the event will focus on educating Ugandans—and the wider global audience—on the consequences of environmental destruction.

Mao highlighted the impact of climate change, pointing to shifting weather patterns as a direct result of human activities harming the planet. He underscored the role of music in raising awareness, explaining that artists can use their craft to deliver powerful messages about the need for environmental conservation.
Richie is expected to be joined by other international acts, including Sister Sledge, among others. The concert aims to not only drive home the importance of preserving nature but also provide a platform for Ugandan artists and creatives to explore opportunities in the industry. Additionally, the event is expected to boost local businesses by opening up new markets and attracting international tourists.
Organizers anticipate a crowd of up to 250,000 people at the event, making it one of the largest climate-focused concerts in Uganda’s history.
